These Snowy Day Peanut Butter & Banana Treats are not only simple to prepare but also a great way to spend a cozy winter day indoors.

Baking these treats is easy, even if your schedule is packed. You can quickly whip up a batch of healthy, homemade snacks with just a handful of everyday ingredients. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just looking for something productive to do on a frosty afternoon, these treats are the perfect way to keep your pup happy and healthy.

The Benefits of Each Ingredient

Bananas: Packed with potassium and fiber, they help support muscle health and aid digestion. Their natural sweetness also makes them a flavorful addition to treats.

Peanut Butter: Rich in protein and healthy fats, it provides energy and supports muscle maintenance. Just ensure it’s xylitol-free for safety.

Oat Flour: A fiber-rich option that’s gentle on the stomach, making it ideal for dogs with sensitivities. It’s a simple, wholesome alternative to wheat.

Flaxseed: Full of omega-3s, it promotes a shiny coat and healthy skin. The added fiber is a bonus for digestion.

Coconut Shavings: Supports healthy skin, a shiny coat, improves digestion, and provides a natural source of energy through their fiber and healthy fats like MCTs. They should be given in moderation as an occasional treat, ensuring only unsweetened coconut is used to avoid added sugars.

Alternative Flours for Dog Treats

If you’re looking to switch up the flours in your homemade dog treats, here are some options and ratios to keep in mind:

Coconut Flour: This super-absorbent flour is great for grain-free recipes, but you’ll need much less. Use 1/4 cup coconut flour for every 1 cup of regular flour, and add an extra egg or some water to keep the dough from drying out.

Almond Flour: A nutty, grain-free option for pups with grain sensitivities. Replace 1 cup of regular flour with 1 cup of almond flour.

Chickpea flour (Garbanzo Bean flour): It is high in protein and easy to work with. Chickpea flour can be swapped 1:1 for regular flour.

Brown Rice Flour: This gluten-free alternative works well but is a little less sticky. Use 1:1 and be ready to knead a bit longer.

Oat Flour: A mild and nutritious option made by blending rolled oats into a fine powder. It’s a direct 1:1 substitute.

Always adjust the wet ingredients if your dough feels too dry or too sticky, as each flour absorbs moisture differently.

Storing and Freezing Your Treats

Once you’ve baked these delicious dog treats, you’ll want to store them properly to keep them fresh and ready for your pup! Here are some easy tips:

Storage

Keep these treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Freezing

Place the cooled treats on a baking sheet and freeze for 1–2 hours until firm. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They’ll stay fresh for up to three months this way.

Thawing

To serve, take out the desired number of treats and thaw them in the refrigerator overnight or let them sit at room temperature for 20–30 minutes.

Be careful not to give your dog frozen foods, as they can be tough on their teeth, especially for dogs with dental issues or sensitive mouths. Plus, very cold foods might upset their stomach, so it’s always a good idea to let frozen treats thaw a bit before serving.

Equipment

  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 Cutting Board
  • 1 Baking Sheet
  • 1 Cookie Cutter

Ingredients

  • 1 Ripe Banana mashed
  • ½ C Unsweetened Peanut Butter xylitol-free
  • 1 C Oat Flour
  • 1 Tbsp Ground Flaxseed
  • ¼ C Water if needed for dough consistency
  • 1 Tbsp Coconut Shavings optional

Instructions

  • Preheat Your Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C)
  • Mix Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, mash the banana until smooth. Stir in the peanut butter until well combined. Add the oat flour and flaxseed, mixing until the dough comes together. If the dough feels too dry, add water a little at a time.
  • Shape the Treats: Roll out the dough to 1/4" thickness and use your fun cookie cutters. If you don't have a cookie cutter, you can make small bite size balls instead. For more options, you can also use silicone molds for this recipe.
  • Bake: Place the treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes or until lightly golden.
  • Remove Treats from Oven: Option to sprinkle the treats with coconut flakes at this time.
  • Cool Completely: Let the treats cool thoroughly before serving. This ensures they're safe and crunchy for your dog.

Notes

Ingredient Substitutions:
  • You can substitute oat flour with any of the above flour if your dog tolerates it. Adjust water as needed to achieve the right dough consistency.
  • If your dog isn't a fan of bananas, try substituting it with plain pumpkin puree or mashed sweet potato.
Dough Texture: The dough should be firm but pliable. If it feels too sticky, sprinkle in a little extra oat flour. If it's too dry, add water a teaspoon at a time.
Xylitol Warning: Always double-check that your peanut butter is free from xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
Coconut (ground or shavings): Should be given in small amounts as an occasional treat since they are high in fat. Always use unsweetened coconut to avoid added sugars, and gradually introduce it to check for sensitivities or allergies.
